Top Tips For Autumn Styling by Grace Parsons
Autumn is my favourite time of year for fashion and styling. My general top tip for autumn is to constantly layer your clothes, it is the perfect way to stay both warm and fashionable during the cooler months. The different layering combinations are endless and don’t be afraid to experiment with so many different styles – think a knit jumper over a plaid shirt or a lace camisole under a blouse. Below are more specific items of clothing and styles that are some of the biggest trends this season.
Cinched in belts are perfect for maintaining an hour-glass silhouette, even with all those layers we need to keep warm. This season we’ll be reaching for our belts to wrap round coats, knits and practically everything in between. A classic leather belt is the perfect accessory, it is so versatile and can be worn with any style of outfit. You can keep it simple, by opting for a timeless brown or black belt, which can be interchangeable with so many colours, or you could be bold and pick out a more colourful belt – in keeping with this year’s trend of bright palettes.
The essential print for this year’s Autumn/Winter is checks. Plaid trousers, coats and blazers are going to be seen everywhere this season and are ideal for adding more depth to your outfits. The key is to keep the rest of your outfit as plain and simple as possible and try to stick to the same colours within the plaid pattern to avoid creating too much of a clash. Neutral tones are a perfect start for the initial integration of plaid into your wardrobe. Beige and grey colour palettes are ideal for a more subtle look, but if you’re feeling braver, red and navy tartan prints are also in this season!
Capes might be a bit intimidating when wearing them for the first time, but they are making a huge comeback and are the predominant outerwear silhouettes for this season. Capes are perfect for that extra layer of warmth without the bulkiness of a coat and help to take the edge off the crisper autumn air. Capes look great with a casual pair of jeans or for a more classic look, a pair of tailored trousers is the way to go.
Leather or “pleather” trousers are a staple piece to own at this time of year because they are both sleek and chic but also provide you with that necessary warmth to help you battle through the colder temperatures. The beauty with leather trousers is that they can be dressed up with a blouse and long boots for a sophisticated evening look, or they can be dressed down with a plain white top, trainers and a denim jacket for a more casual day look. Black is the perfect colour to opt for, it is timeless and can be paired with every item within your wardrobe.
These few select staples are perfect to add to your everyday wear, so shop for the on-trend pieces but always remember to make it your own – try to bring something new into your Autumn routine.
