Update from Hinckley and District Parkinson’s Branch
With all the uncertainties about the pandemic we have not yet been able to finalise dates for the restarting of actual meetings for those in the Atherstone area – at Hinckley. We look forward to seeing those with Parkinson’s, their carers or families for our regular monthly meetings at the Mary Forryan Centre, Hinckley weekly exercise classes, Friday evening singing therapy sessions and the relaxed, informal ‘drop-in’ afternoon teas at Dobbies Garden Centre at Stapleton. Let us hope that these will be underway again by September. Watch this space!
Meanwhile the Hinckley Branch has started a Carers’ Group, initially meeting on Zoom on the second Sunday afternoon of each month. The aim of the group is to allow fellow carers to get to know one another and share problems, situations, approaches and ideas. It is meant to be a forum for chat, advice, general support and a listening ear, “reaching out so that no one feels on their own”.
The format of the meetings will be determined by the membership, but one request was to have specific speakers on particular themes. We have already heard about a telephone befriending service, a straightforward Carers’ Guide booklet, a card and lanyard to show that you are a carer, and a new ‘Carers’ Passport’ to provide identification at surgeries, hospitals, supermarkets, and on trains or buses, to make access simpler.
That is useful information for all carers, whatever the disease or disability involved. We have learned that all carers should make sure that their local surgery is aware of the situation and that all carers complete an assessment even if they think that they do not need help at this stage. Carers always seem to be naturally reluctant to seek help.
In the meantime, we hope that everyone is keeping safe but getting out for a walk if possible and keeping the radio on to avoid a silent house. If you or anyone you know might benefit from becoming a member of their local Parkinson’s Group, please encourage them to get in touch. For advice or just a chat give Janet Kavanagh a call on 07932 615233 or Tina Connor on 01455 699937.
